Recycle Your Bike Before Earth Day!

Have an unwanted bicycle sitting in your garage collecting dust?

Consider donating your unused bikes to Africycle keeping them out of our landfills and helping a worthy cause. Africycle helps provide quality, affordable transportation to the people of Malawi, Africa.
In conjunction with Earth Week, the main bicycle drop off day is Saturday April 20, 2013, from 9am – 11am at 6 locations across south Durham and Uxbridge.

Whitby Shores drop off location this year is at St. John’s the Evangelist Church, 903 Giffard Street, Whitby. Click here for other map locations & additional dates/times.

We are very proud that our Whitby Shores community has taken part in this worthy event for the past 5 years with well over 150 bicycles being donated from within our area alone. We hope that you will continue to support Africycle. Click here if you wish to make a contribution to Africycle at Canada Helps. Donations of $20 or more will receive receipts.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless, colorless gas produced by the combustion of fuels such as natural gas, oil, and propane in mechanical unit including furnaces, water heaters, and stoves. These items are normally designed to vent the CO to the outside, but harmful interior levels of CO can result from incomplete combustion of fuel, improper installation, or blockages, leaks or cracks in the venting systems. We want to introduce you to Durham Region’s only non-contact football program for boys and girls 5-15, the Whitby Lions Football Program.

As a member of the Chamber and the local business community we are asking for your organization to consider making an investment in our players’ lives and help us make a positive impact in the Town of Whitby and Durham Region.

ABOUT THE WHITBY LIONS FOOTBALL CLUB
The Whitby Lions Football Club provides community based non-contact football program in Whitby and Durham region. We are deeply committed to the youth of Durham region and strongly believe that by engaging youth in our programs we can divert them from negative recreations such as drugs and violence while encouraging boys and girls to become and remain physically fit. The programs we have to offer will help build youth of character through the game of football by teaching them the lifelong lessons of communication, teamwork, sacrifice and dedication.

WHY NON-CONTACT FOOTBALL
The Whitby Lions Football Club is offering a new option for kids who wish to learn the fundamentals of football without the risks present in the traditional tackle leagues. Our football programs (Flag – Spring; Touch – Fall) will provide a non-contact approach to the game of football, instead of tackling opponents, players will simply touch or remove the flag to cause a stoppage in play.

HOW CAN YOU AND YOUR ORGANIZATION CAN GET INVOLVED
As with any sport, there are costs associated with providing our community with a top notch football program. We are asking for your help to defray some of those costs as we strongly believe the most successful sports programs are the ones that have the emotional and financial support from and with their community. Contributions from organizations like yours are essential to the success and growth of our organization. It will help us keep our program accessible to all income levels by keeping our fees manageable and will assist us in purchasing and maintaining equipment and fields for our players.
Each and every contribution will be recognized for their committed to encouraging and supporting the engagement of youth in our community through sport.

September Registration for 7th Whitby Scout Group

Scouts Canada, the country’s leading youth organization, offers challenging programs or boys, girls, and young adults. Scouting makes a difference, providing opportunities for youth to grow, experience new “firsts” and develop into citizens of the world.

Scouts demonstrate self-confidence and optimism. They express a strong sense of civic responsibility and have a desire to give back to the community. They become more physically fit, energetic, outgoing, conscientious and compassionate. Plus they have a lot of fun!

7th Whitby Scout Group offers a full complement of scouting sections:

Beaver Scouts (5-7) * Cub Scouts (8-10) * Scouts (11-14) * Venturer Scouts (14-17)

7th Whitby primarily serves the West Lynde & Whitby Shores areas; bordered roughly by Lakeridge Road in the west, Dundas to the north, Henry Street in the East and Lake Ontario to the south.

Our meetings run approximately from the middle of September through to the middle of June, depending upon the section. Our sections meet:

BEAVERS: Mondays 6:30 – 7:30 PM     (Whitby Shores P.S.)
CUBS: Mondays 6:30 – 8:00 PM             (West Lynde P.S.)
SCOUTS: Wednesdays 7:00 – 8:30 PM        (St John the Evangelist C. S.)
VENTURERS: Thursdays 7:00 – 9:00 PM (West Lynde P.S.)

We welcome all youth to join and are especially seeking Scout and Venturer age youth to join and “Share The Adenture” of scouting.

BUT WHY LET KIDS HAVE ALL THE FUN? Scouts Canada relies on its network of more than 24,000 caring and dedicated volunteers to deliver its programming to youth. And there is always room for more.

So whether you are looking to register your son or daughter in one of Scouts Canada’s fun and challenging programs, looking to find a rewarding volunteering experience for ourself, or both, you have found the right place.

REGISTRATION NIGHTS will be held in early September at both Whitby Shores and West Lynde Public Schools. Regular Youth Registration rate for new members is $180.00. Details will be posted in the September newsletter at each school or contact our Registrar, Mary-Alice Harvey at 905-666-1920 for information or to register NOW.
